I have recently posted a narrated version of my PowerPoint lecture detailing my research into how Blumenbach’s’ major anthropological works were mistranslated in 1865 (during the Civil War).  You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d21f61Ev4Q

What this page is about.

I am John S. Michael, a historian and independent scholar who has published on the origins of physical anthropology, especially the race theories of Johann F. Blumenbach (1752–1840) and Samuel G. Morton (1799–1851). In 1986, when I was an undergraduate, I conducted osteometric research on the Morton Collection of Human Skulls, which was acquired by Morton circa 1830–1840.

For the last 30 years I have pursued a career working on public sector land use planning projects, conducting environmental and demographic research. In 2011, I began to conduct an in-depth historical investigation into Morton, who worked in Philadelphia, as well as Blumenbach of Göttingen, Germany, who pioneered the anatomical study of skulls prior to Morton. I am currently writing a book entitled His Admirable Collection of Skulls, which will detail the research of these two men and other craniologists. This web page presents some of the findings of my research, and links to web pages that I have found useful.
